In this episode of The Your Five Letter Word Podcast, we dive into the fascinating topic of social influences and how they impact us on a daily basis. Whether it's the people we surround ourselves with or the media we consume, every influence shapes our mindset, decisions, communication skills, and ultimately, our quality of life.
When it comes to understanding Social Influences, allow me to introduce you to my Onion Layer Theory.
My Onion Layer Theory is a way to understand how these influences work:
Think of yourself as the core of an onion, with layers representing the various influences in your life—family, friends, colleagues, community, media, and society. Just like how mold can spread through an onion, negative influences can seep into your life and affect every layer. On the flip side, curating positive influences can help you thrive. So, whether you’re trying to achieve a personal goal or improve your communication skills, understanding and intentionally managing these layers is key.
Key takeaways from this episode:
Social influences shape our beliefs, actions, and mindset, whether we’re aware of it or not.
The Onion Layer Theory helps you visualize how different layers of influence—family, friends, community, media—affect your life and communication style.
Just as negative influences can spread like mold, positive influences can uplift and empower you, improving your communication and overall mindset.
Curating the right influences, from the media you consume to the people you spend time with, is crucial for reaching your goals and maintaining a positive communication approach.
If you’ve ever felt drained by certain people or demotivated after scrolling through social media, it’s time to take control of the influences you allow into your life. Start with the outer layers—what kind of content are you consuming?
Are you following people who inspire you, or are you comparing yourself to accounts that leave you feeling less than? Once you’ve cleaned up the outer layers, you can begin working inward, setting mental boundaries with negative influences, whether that’s a critical coworker or a family member who doesn’t understand your goals.
Being intentional with the influences you surround yourself with can change the way you think, feel, and communicate. It’s a powerful step toward living the life you want, and it’s completely within your control.
Today’s five-letter word is onion.
Onion. As you move through your days, remember the Onion Layer Theory. Start from the outside and work your way in, curating positive influences that align with your values and goals. And don’t let the mold of negativity spread through your layers—be mindful of what you allow to influence you.
